On Tuesday morning of June 30th. A. P. Hill, after being advised by his subordinate Henry Heth that Federal soldiers were heading towards Gettysburg, withdrew his brigade. The Confederates had attempted to rai Gettysburg for much needed supplies -- especially shoes. A. P. Hill stating he would go back the following morning to "Get those shoes."
Although this is under much debate, the Confederates were in Gettysburg to gather supplies. They had ran into the Union soldiers and were pushed out of town. What began as a skirmish ended as the largest, most costly battle America had yet to see.
